June is about to begin, and therefore so does my annual participation with The Wildlife Trusts’ 30 Days Wild Challenge.
I will try and get the Not-So-Smalls to join in with things where I can, but it’s mostly going to just be me this year I think.
I have my poster up, ready for me to fill in what I get up to, and I have received my pack of wildflower seeds ready to plant for one of my activities during the month.
What is 30 Days Wild?
You probably already know, but just in case you don’t, The Wildlife Trusts challenge everyone to do one ‘wild’ thing a day throughout June – in the hope that we will all fall back in love with our world, improve our own mental health and maybe take some action to protect where we live.
A quick search on social media will take you to their pages full of ideas and you can go to their website to find out more as well. It’s not too late to sign up and get the digital pack to join in!
What Next?
Hopefully I will keep you posted on what I get up to, but I’m not going to promise a blog post every day because I know I’ll never manage it (I’m off to a wedding one weekend, I will do my something Wild but probably won’t remember to blog it until I’m home!)
It is half term here at the moment so I am thinking I might kick the month off with a nice walk somewhere with Chase and the Not-So-Smalls… but equally the kids might announce they don’t want to go for a walk so it might just be me and the furry one.
I am also going to be playing Sensory Bingo through the month – see how long it takes me to get a line and then full house!
If nothing else, these tasks will give me inspiration on busy days for some things I can do easily and quickly. There’s 21 options – if I just did one of these a day that would be most of the month, but I think I can do more than one a day if I try and fit in some other stuff, too.
Hopefully I will see another of these little guys in the garden again. That’s Huff, who I found not very well on my patio one afternoon in early April. He was very small and from what I could tell, a bit underweight – I think he had woken up too early and then got caught out by the temperature drop in the late afternoon. Coupled with there not being much in the way of food around at the time, he made it as far as my patio doors before just giving up all spreadeagled and exhausted.
I scooped him up in a blanket (should have folded it double – those prickles aren’t just for show!) and made him as comfortable as I could in Amber’s cat carrier in the Utility room, he had blankets, a dish of water, and a small amount of meaty wet cat food.
I did my best to help him, and I think he was comfortable as he went from quivering to snuggling up in the blanket and snoring gently, but it sadly wasn’t to be – he was just too poorly. But at least he was warm and safe in the end – passing away some point in the night before I could take him to the rescue centre in the morning.
With a bit of luck, now it is warmer, any hogs waking up will be in a better state and able to find food and water. I love it when they are snuffling round the garden in the gloaming – they’re so noisy. Especially if they find something crunchy to eat – cronch cronch cronch!!
Ah well, who knows what June will bring? Let me know if you’re joining in with 30 Days Wild, too!
