The Little Things

Sometimes, when a day feels un-rescuable and you don’t really see the point in trying anymore, it is a tiny little thing that grounds you again and helps you find a bit of inner-peace.

Today that little thing, was finding teeny tiny mushrooms when I was out with Chase. We had gone on a longer walk than normal because I wanted to try and walk out the pent-up frustration and grouchiness that I was feeling, so we ended up in a different patch of woodland to where we normally hang out.

And there, on some fallen trees, were the sweetest little creamy orange mushrooms that you ever did see.

Coupled with the springy green moss and the crunchy fallen leaves, the five minutes I spent crouched down looking at them from every angle (and taking pictures) worked wonders for settling my brain.

Just the textures and the colours, the smell of the damp woods, the jackdaws cawing and jostling in the trees around me – all of it together managed to slow the freight train of my thoughts that had been barrelling at a million miles an hour since yesterday.

And because it is very hard to work out the scale of the mushrooms from these pictures, I also took this one to help:

That’s the same mushrooms as the last picture, next to my thumb for scale.

They really were adorably tiny and perfect.

I feel much better after my walk, and more like I can go about my day without imploding or exploding at anyone or anything. Maybe there is something in that advice to get outside that everyone throws around.
