It occurred to me the other day, whilst I was searching online for ideas for Lion King themed games for us to play at Squirrel Scouts, that it might be helpful if I posted some of the stuff we do on here.
So other slightly frazzled scout leaders stand a chance of finding something to make their lives easier, too.
This is not a post on Lion King games – we haven’t play tested them all yet for me to know if they work – but instead is an activity we did on Bonfire Night that would work for any evening themed around fire. Campfires, Bonfires, just random non-specific fires – anything burny really!
Today we are going to be making…
Bonfire Biscuits
It is an edible craft, but not one that involves any cooking so it was perfect for the Squirrels (aged 4-6, attention span of… well, squirrels) and would be great to do outdoors on a camp with older kids, too. They are fun to make and look really effective.
You Will Need (Per Biscuit):
- 1 Chocolate Digestive
- 3 Yellow/Orange/Red Sweets (we used Haribo Tropi-Slices)
- 10 White Mini Marshmallows
- 4 Matchmaker Chocolate Sticks (or similar)
- Thick Icing For Securing Items (Icing Sugar & Water mixed to make a thick paste)
Instructions:
1. Using your chocolate digestive biscuit as a base (chocolate side up), place your fire coloured sweets in the middle to create your flames.
*
2. Using your icing to secure them, create a ring of marshmallows around the outer edge of the biscuit. This is to represent a fire pit – even edible fires need to be safe!
*
3. Snap your Matchmakers into two or three pieces each and arrange them over the flames to create your bonfire. You can use icing to help fix them in place if you like.
Leave everything to set for a couple of minutes and you’re done!
The Squirrels really enjoyed this one and everyone went home with something that looked like a tiny fire (only better, because it had sweets in it) – they were sometimes a little heavy handed with the icing, but that didn’t really matter.
Overall, this was a largely mess-free activity (only one Squirrel left the activity station looking like they’d bathed in icing…) and pretty easy to set up before-hand.
Let me know if you give it a go – just for fun or with Littles!
