Top 5 Friday

Welcome back to the entirely pointless fun that is Top 5 Friday!

Today I’m ranking ‘Autumnal Scottish Rainbows 2026’ because over the last couple of months I have seen approximately 5,926 rainbows whilst driving in Scotland and some of them quite frankly transcended words and, though I have photos to share, were impossible to truly capture on ‘film’. (Do we still say that when exactly zero film is involved in the photography process?)

5. Selkirk

This one was cool because it was entirely against the blue sky rather than clouds, which felt unusual. Not the brightest, but interesting.

4. Auldearn

This one was very satisfyingly positioned over the road and it felt like we were in a game or on a movie set driving towards it.

3. Lochluichart

This one is here simply because it was weird. It never became rainbow shaped, it remained a blob the whole time it was in view. Never seen anything like it before, 10 out of 10 for uniqueness.

2. Lairg

One of those moments where you have the weirdest urge to look behind you for no reason – turned out there were two reasons! If you look closely at the back of the car behind my head you can see that despite the bold golden sunlight, it was also raining some quite hefty raindrops at the same time.

1. Achfary

This one, genuinely, took my breath away. It did not look real. The intensity of colour in that rogue shaft of sunlight between thunder-dark clouds, the rain misting down below it, the hills, the Z4s zooming along towards it.

Just incredible.

In conclusion, Scotland does all weathers with enthusiasm and Caius and I are idiots who believe all weather is roof-down weather. Also, we spend a lot of time driving up and down to Scotland sometimes, considering we don’t exactly live nearby… worth it for those views though!

And the answer to ‘what is at the end of the rainbow?’ is definitely ‘Scotland’.

Seen any good rainbows lately?
