September Reading Wrap Up

I haven’t done a reading catch-up for a while, so I thought I’d do a Wrap-Up of what I read last month, and helpfully, Storygraph has got me covered with a pretty graphic and everything.

Graphic shows that CaroleHeidi has read 6 books in September, comprising of 760 physical pages, and 57.17 hours of audio books. Her average rating of the books was 4.08 out of 5.

I did a lot more audio reading than physical reading, with four of the six books I finished being audiobooks – meaning I listened to just over 51 hours of other people reading me stories!

The six books I read were:

  • Nice Dragons Finish Last by Rachael Aaron (Audio),
  • The Midnight Lie by Marie Rutkoski (Hardback),
  • The Boy On The Bridge by M.R. Carey (Audio),
  • We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler (Audio),
  • The Castle Of Tangled Magic by Sophie Anderson (Paperback),
  • The Shadow Of What Was Lost by James Islington (Audio).

My favourite book of the month was The Boy On The Bridge by M. R. Carey – which I listened to on audio, but also have the physical book of. It is a prequel to The Girl With All The Gifts which I read back in June 2019 and loved.

I think I actually enjoyed The Boy On The Bridge even more than Girl although I can’t quite put my finger on why. They are also the sort of books that are hard to talk about without being spoilery, so you’ll just have to go pick them up for yourselves. Assuming you like sci-fi thrillers, that is.

Coming in last, in what was actually a pretty good month for books, was We Are All completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler which was very well written and compelling to read, but just not really my thing. I’m more of a fantasy girl than ‘historical’ fiction (much as it pains me to call the 1980s ‘historical’…) is all.

It was a bit ‘real’ for my liking although it was a quite interesting study of human psychology and family dynamics through some surprising and unusual situations, that I don’t want to spoil.

My longest read was The Shadow Of What Was Lost by James Islington which was another audiobook and counted for 25 hours and 28 minutes of my total time listened all by itself! I really love audiobooks for being able to tackle proper epic fantasy bricks without having to lug them around with me everywhere.

As for October, I am part way through A Heart So Fierce And Broken by Brigid Kemmerer (and have almost remembered what happened in book 1 which I also read back in 2019!), two chapters into Restless Stars by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti (which is book number 9 in the Zodiac Academy series, but I remember what happened in the last books because shockingly I read all 8 of the previous ones between the end of July and now), and am about half way through Heroes by Stephen Fry.

I’ve also got Ink Blood Sister Scribe by Emma Törzs downloaded and ready to go as my next audiobook.
